Q&A
What do you find most satisfying about your work?
The most satisfying thing is the comfort it can bring people. Every day people tell me that I’ve changed their lives, and that means the world to me. I remember one couple came to me who’d been trying for a baby. I told them they were going to have twins, a boy and a girl, and I told them the date they would be born.
A few months later the mother fell pregnant, but about five months in she called me in hysterics. The doctor had told them the boy had a defect, and when he was born he’d die. But I told her that was wrong, because I’d seen her with a boy and a girl. So they kept both the twins, and when they were born the doctors had to admit they’d made a mistake. Now I’ve got a beautiful photo of the twins in the bath on my wall, and he’s perfectly healthy and happy.
How do you deal with cynics and sceptics?
Well, because this exposure has come at this point in my life I think I can handle it better. But I’m fed up with qualifying what I do, so I want the cynics and the sceptics to prove to me that there is no afterlife, I want them to prove to me that I’m mad. As far as I’m concerned I’ve been doing this so long now, and such extraordinary things have happened to me, that I know it’s real. I’m willing to look at this scientifically with these people, but they don’t want that. They just want to turn around and say that it’s rubbish. But if they don’t want me to do this then they’ve got to prove to me that what I’m doing doesn’t exist.
Is there a code of conduct that people with your abilities follow?
There isn’t, but I naturally have boundaries. With my work I would never see anybody under 21 without their parents’ permission, and I would never say if a death was going to happen, either to the sitter or somebody around them - although you do get people who profess to do that sort of thing. You have to have ethics in this work.
Why do you attract so many celebrity clients?
I’ve always seen famous people, it’s never fazed me. I’ve always worked by word of mouth, so it’s not that I’m out there seeking fame, it’s simply because I saw one or two famous people, they spoke about me, their circle of friends were famous and it grew from there.
How did your TV show come about?
It was quite simple really, I was just presented with a format by the executive producer of the series. Over the years I’ve been presented with quite a lot of offers that I’ve turned down, because I didn’t want anything to do with them. This was the first one that I could see working, where the viewer could see that it was genuine.
What’s the principle behind it?
I want total transparency with my work, because there are enough people out there who give my work a bad name. So the show is very much like a reality programme. I insisted on no scripts, no day sheets, I didn’t want to know who I was going to see, I didn’t want to know anything. I work best when it’s very instant. Around 80% of my work is with complete strangers, and I wanted the show to portray that.
How have you adjusted to life on TV?
Well I don’t think I have yet! The last year has just been amazing. It’s overwhelming, because while I’ve always had a thriving practice, we can’t have the office phones at our house anymore because we’ve had hundreds of thousands of enquiries since the first show went out. And I’m often recognised when I go out now. It’s completely life changing. It’s all very flattering, but at this age I smile at it, it won’t go to my head. I’m not going to turn to drink and drugs! But it’s my fifteen minutes and I’m enjoying myself.
